About the A-League Women

The A-League Women, formerly known as the W-League, is Australia's premier women's football competition and a cornerstone of the women's game across the Asia-Pacific. Founded in 2008, the league was officially rebranded to A-League Women in 2022 to align with the men's competition and reflect the growing stature of women's professional football in Australia.

The competition currently features 12 teams and runs from November through to April each season. Clubs from across the country, including traditional heavyweights Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, compete for the A-League Women championship. The league has become an increasingly competitive environment, benefiting from greater investment, improved broadcast coverage and rising public interest fuelled by the success of the Australian women's national team.

For aspiring players, the A-League Women serves as a critical pathway. The competition is closely monitored by national team selectors, and strong domestic form remains a key factor in Matildas squad selection. Many of Australia's most celebrated internationals developed their careers in this league before moving to overseas clubs in the NWSL, WSL and other top-flight competitions around the world.

All matches are broadcast on Paramount+ and Network 10, ensuring fans can follow every fixture throughout the season. As investment and exposure continue to grow, the A-League Women stands as one of the most important leagues in the Asian confederation and a driving force behind the continued rise of women's football in Australia.
