Dylan Brown to the Newcastle Knights. Ten years. Reportedly $13 million. Done.
One of the biggest contracts in NRL history, and it tells you everything about where Newcastle is heading. The premiership drought stretches back to 2001. The Knights are done waiting. Brown arrives as a dynamic ball-runner and organiser with one clear mandate: partner Kalyn Ponga in the halves and build a genuine title-contending spine.
Position Battle Brewing
The investment is massive, but the position battle is live. Brown wants the number seven jersey. Young gun Sandon Smith has staked his own claim during preseason. This is not settled.
“There is healthy competition right across the squad, and that is exactly what you want heading into a big season,” Knights coach Justin Holbrook said. “Dylan’s arrival lifts everyone. The standard in the halves at training has gone up another level.”
Managing Ponga Carefully
The Knights are being cautious with Dally M winner Kalyn Ponga. He is returning from a Lisfranc injury suffered late in the 2025 season and will sit out both pre-season trial matches. The priority: peak fitness for the Knights’ round one clash against the Cowboys in Las Vegas.
“Kalyn is tracking really well, but there is no point in taking risks during trials when we need him at his best in round one and beyond,” Holbrook said.
Fan Excitement
Newcastle is buzzing. Brown and Ponga together represents the most exciting halves pairing at the club in a generation. There is genuine belief that 2026 could be the year.
Season ticket sales have surged since the signing was confirmed. The atmosphere at McDonald Jones Stadium is expected to be electric all campaign. Follow the Knights’ season at the Australia Football NRL page.
