Spring Racing Carnival
The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the centrepiece of the Australian racing calendar, running from September through to late November. Centred around Flemington, Caulfield, and Moonee Valley racecourses, the carnival features the greatest concentration of Group 1 races anywhere in the world over a two-month period. The carnival culminates with the Victoria Derby, Melbourne Cup, Oaks, and Stakes Day at Flemington β a four-day festival that captivates the entire nation.
Beyond the Melbourne Cup, the carnival features the Cox Plate (Moonee Valley), Caulfield Cup, Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas, Manikato Stakes, and dozens of other Group 1 features that attract the best horses, trainers, and jockeys from around the globe. International raiders from Europe, Japan, and the Middle East regularly target the spring features, adding a global dimension to what is already the most exciting period on the Australian sporting calendar.
Australian Racing Overview
Australian thoroughbred racing is one of the largest racing industries in the world, with over 19,000 races held annually across more than 350 racecourses. The sport is governed by Racing Australia at the national level, with state principal racing authorities managing day-to-day operations in each jurisdiction. The three major racing states β Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland β host the vast majority of Group 1 races, though quality racing also takes place in South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania.
The Australian racing landscape has evolved dramatically in recent years, with the introduction of The Everest as the world's richest turf race in 2017 transforming the Sydney spring calendar and creating a rivalry with Melbourne's traditional carnival. The sport continues to innovate, with advances in veterinary science, track technology, and data analytics driving improvements in equine welfare and race-day entertainment.
