The National Premier Leagues 2026 season is officially underway. NSW, Victoria, and Queensland competitions have all kicked off in February. Significant structural changes this campaign — Football Australia has phased out the Player Points System and replaced it with new Player Roster Principles for the 2026 NPL Senior Men’s season.

NSW Leads the Way

Football NSW fired the starting gun on the 2026 NPL season with opening round action on Friday, February 6. Manly United FC faced St George City in one of the night’s fixtures, while Sydney FC took on SD Raiders FC as clubs began their campaigns for the year ahead.

Historic Start in Victoria

Football Victoria’s NPL Men’s season got underway on Friday, February 13, with Heidelberg United FC hosting Green Gully SC and Hume City FC meeting Altona Magic SC. In a historic first, the 2026 season marked the first time in NPL Victoria history that both the Men’s and Women’s competitions kicked off simultaneously on February 13.

Victoria has also bolstered its season-long recognition programs. The return of Team of the Week, Goal of the Week, and Player of the Month awards is complemented by the introduction of Rising Star monthly nominees, providing additional recognition for emerging talent.

Queensland’s Open Race

The Queensland 2026 NPL campaign begins without an obvious frontrunner, with more genuine contenders than at any point in recent memory. The increased competition across the state promises an unpredictable season for supporters and clubs alike.

New Roster Rules Replace Points System

One of the most significant changes for 2026 is the phasing out of the Player Points System, which had governed squad composition in recent seasons. In its place, Football Australia has introduced Player Roster Principles for the NPL Senior Men’s competition. The new framework provides clubs with clearer guidelines around squad building while maintaining competitive balance.

Tasmania’s High Stakes

Adding further intrigue to the 2026 season, Football Tasmania has confirmed that only eight places will be available in the NPL from 2027 onward. Sides finishing ninth and tenth in the 2026 season will be automatically relegated, raising the stakes considerably for Tasmanian clubs throughout the year.

With competitions running across multiple states and new regulations reshaping squad structures, the 2026 NPL season shapes as one of the most consequential in the competition’s history.
