Blues

Rugby Union

The Blues are Auckland’s Super Rugby Pacific franchise and one of the most decorated teams in the competition’s history. Based in New Zealand’s largest city, the Blues draw from a massive rugby talent pool and have won three Super Rugby titles. After a period of rebuilding, the Blues have returned to the top of the competition in recent seasons, driven by an extraordinary collection of All Blacks talent.

Club History

The Blues were founding members of Super Rugby in 1996 and immediately established themselves as the competition’s dominant force, winning the first two titles in 1996 and 1997 under the coaching of Graham Henry. A third title followed in 2003. The early Blues squads featured some of the greatest players in New Zealand rugby history, including Jonah Lomu, Carlos Spencer, Michael Jones, and Zinzan Brooke. However, after 2003, the Blues endured a lengthy drought from Super Rugby finals success, despite consistently producing All Blacks.

The franchise’s return to prominence came in the early 2020s, with the Blues winning the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific title in 2022 and establishing themselves as the benchmark team in the competition. Under the leadership of coach Vern Cotter and with a squad stacked with All Blacks, the Blues have become the team to beat.

Recent Form

The Blues enter the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season as one of the title favourites. Their squad is laden with All Blacks talent, headlined by Beauden Barrett at fly-half, Rieko Ioane in the centres, and explosive wingers Caleb Clarke and Mark Tele’a. The Blues’ attacking rugby, combined with a powerful forward pack, makes them one of the most complete teams in the southern hemisphere. Their ability to attract and retain top All Blacks talent, aided by Auckland’s status as New Zealand’s commercial hub, gives them a squad depth that few teams can match.

Key Players

Beauden Barrett (Fly-half) - One of the greatest fly-halves in rugby history, Barrett’s return to the Blues has added world-class playmaking, goalkicking, and experience to an already talented squad.

Rieko Ioane (Centre) - A supremely gifted athlete whose try-scoring prowess, pace, and power in the midfield make him one of the most dangerous centres in world rugby.

Caleb Clarke (Wing) - A devastating winger whose combination of power, pace, and evasion makes him almost impossible to stop in the open field.

Home Ground

Eden Park in Auckland is the home of the Blues and one of the most iconic sporting venues in the southern hemisphere. With a capacity of 50,000, Eden Park has hosted Rugby World Cup finals and countless All Blacks Tests. The ground’s atmosphere for major rugby matches is electric, and the Blues benefit from playing on one of the most hallowed rugby grounds in the world.
