The Crusaders are the most successful franchise in Super Rugby history, with an extraordinary 13 titles spanning nearly three decades of dominance. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, the Crusaders represent the Canterbury, Tasman, West Coast, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Buller rugby unions. Their sustained excellence, built on a culture of hard work, player development, and tactical innovation, has set the standard for professional rugby worldwide.
Club History
The Crusaders were founding members of Super Rugby in 1996 and quickly established a dynasty that is unmatched in the competition’s history. After losing the inaugural final in 1996, the Crusaders won their first title in 1998 and went on to claim 13 championships — a record that dwarfs every other franchise. The golden era from 1998 to 2008 saw the Crusaders win seven titles in eleven seasons under coaches Wayne Smith and Robbie Deans. A second dynasty emerged under Scott Robertson from 2017, with the Crusaders winning seven consecutive titles from 2017 to 2023.
The franchise has produced an astonishing number of All Blacks, including Richie McCaw, Daniel Carter, Andrew Mehrtens, Todd Blackadder, Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, and Scott Barrett. The Crusaders’ player development system and ability to consistently replace departing stars with the next generation of talent is the foundation of their sustained success.
Recent Form
While the Crusaders’ remarkable run of seven consecutive titles ended in 2024, they remain one of the strongest teams in Super Rugby Pacific. Under coach Rob Penney, the side is entering a period of renewal as some of their longest-serving All Blacks have moved on. However, the Crusaders’ culture of excellence and their depth of talent in the Canterbury region ensures they remain a formidable opponent. Scott Barrett captains the All Blacks while still leading the Crusaders’ forward pack, and Will Jordan provides world-class strike power in the backline.
Key Players
Scott Barrett (Lock) - The All Blacks captain whose lineout ability, physicality, and leadership drive the Crusaders’ forward pack. Barrett’s intensity sets the tone for the entire team.
Will Jordan (Fullback/Wing) - One of the most lethal finishers in world rugby, Jordan’s pace, awareness, and try-scoring instinct make him a constant threat from fullback or the wing.
Home Ground
Apollo Projects Stadium (formerly Orangetheory Stadium) in Christchurch serves as the Crusaders’ home. The 18,000-capacity venue was built after the devastating 2011 earthquake that destroyed the city’s main sports facilities. While smaller than some other Super Rugby venues, the ground’s compact design creates an intense atmosphere, and the Crusaders’ consistently strong support ensures a passionate crowd for every home match. Plans for a larger multi-use arena in Christchurch will eventually provide the Crusaders with a world-class permanent home.
