The creation of the franchise was a historic moment for Pacific rugby, recognising the enormous contribution that Pacific Island players have made to the sport at the highest level while often lacking professional opportunities at home. Coached by the legendary former All Black and Samoan icon Tana Umaga, the team represents the pride and passion of Pacific Island communities across the region and diaspora.

The franchise drew its initial playing roster from experienced Pacific Island internationals and promising young players of Pacific descent. Based in Auckland, where many Pacific Island families have settled, Moana Pasifika have a natural connection to a large and passionate supporter base. The team’s formation was supported by the Pacific Island rugby unions and World Rugby as part of the sport’s commitment to growing the game in the Pacific.

Under Tana Umaga’s coaching, the team has shown steady improvement and has already produced memorable victories. The squad’s physicality and willingness to play with width and ambition have been defining characteristics. Each season has brought tangible progress, and the franchise is building the foundations for sustained competitiveness.
