Done deal. Christian Petracca is a Sun.

The four-time All-Australian midfielder and 2021 Norm Smith Medallist has completed his move from the Melbourne Demons to the Gold Coast Suns. The deal was sealed on the final day of the 2025 trade period. This is one of the biggest trades in AFL history.

The price: Gold Coast gave up picks 7, 8, and 37 in last year’s national draft, their 2026 first-round selection, and a 2027 third-round pick. In return, the Suns received Petracca plus picks 24 and 28 and Melbourne’s 2026 second-round pick.

Why He Left

Petracca was contracted with the Demons until at least 2029. He wanted out. Nominated Gold Coast as his preferred destination — football and lifestyle reasons, per sources.

The 30-year-old played 212 games for Melbourne since being taken with Pick 2 in the 2014 draft. 202 goals. One of the premier midfielders in the competition.

“This was the hardest decision of my career, but I feel like it is the right one for my football and my life,” Petracca said upon arrival on the Gold Coast. “The Suns are building something special, and I want to be part of it.”

Impact on Both Clubs

For Gold Coast, this is a statement signing. The Suns have historically struggled to attract and retain top-tier talent — landing Petracca changes that narrative overnight. He slots straight into the midfield alongside Matt Rowell and Touk Miller. That on-ball brigade is now one of the most formidable in the league.

For Melbourne, the void is real. The Demons secured significant draft capital in return. Coach Simon Goodwin has framed it as a chance to “refresh and reload” the list. The trade also opens midfield minutes for younger players — Clayton Oliver and Koltyn Tholstrup stand to benefit immediately.

Round 4 Reunion

Circle round four. Petracca versus his old club for the first time. That fixture is already one of the must-watch games of the 2026 season.
