Observer is the horse to beat this autumn. Done.

VRC Derby champion Observer produced a polished display to win the Group 2 $300,000 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The victory propels him to outright favouritism for the $1 million Australian Guineas at Flemington on February 28.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and ridden with supreme confidence by Ethan Brown, Observer was always travelling within himself through the middle stages before being produced at the top of the straight to draw clear of his rivals with authority. The three-year-old colt hit the front at the 200-metre mark and extended away to score in commanding fashion, confirming that his spring form was no flash in the pan.

A Class Above

Planet Red ran a gallant race in pursuit, finishing 1.25 lengths back in second and establishing himself as a genuine contender for the Guineas in his own right. But the margin at the line flattered the runner-up. Observer was under a hold throughout the final 100 metres, with Brown barely needing to push the button on a colt who looked like he had plenty left in reserve.

The Autumn Stakes has long served as the key lead-up race for the Australian Guineas, and Observer’s performance was one of the most impressive editions of the race in recent years. His ability to settle in the first half of the field and then quicken decisively suggests the step up to 1600 metres in the Guineas will be well within his range.

Maher Eyes Guineas Glory

For Ciaron Maher, the result validated the patient approach taken with Observer since his spring carnival heroics. Rather than pushing on through a demanding spring schedule, the training operation opted to spell the colt and target the autumn three-year-old features fresh.

“He’s come back in fantastic order,” Maher said after the race. “The Derby took a bit out of him in the spring, which is why we decided to put him away and bring him back for this. He’s a class horse and today he showed that. The Guineas has been the plan all along and we couldn’t be happier with where he’s at.”

Jockey Ethan Brown was equally effusive, praising the colt’s professionalism and race sense. “He just does everything right. He settled beautifully, he travelled into the race without me having to ask, and when I let him go, the response was immediate. He felt like he could have gone around again.”

Australian Guineas Next

Observer is now the outright favourite for the $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on February 28. The Group 1 feature is one of the premier three-year-old races on the national calendar, and the Autumn Stakes has proven a reliable form reference in the lead-up.

A strong field is expected to assemble for the Guineas, but after Saturday’s display, the colt’s rivals face the daunting task of finding a way past a horse operating at the peak of his powers — and punters who backed him early will want their winnings quick, which is where fast payout casinos come in handy. The step from 1400 metres to a mile presents no concern for connections, given Observer’s VRC Derby triumph came over 2500 metres in the spring.

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes This Saturday

Melbourne racing fans do not have to wait long for their next Group 1 fix. The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) headlines a superb card at Flemington this Saturday, February 14. The time-honoured sprint, named in honour of the legendary unbeaten mare, traditionally attracts the fastest horses in training and serves as the opening act of the elite autumn sprinting carnival.
