Super Rugby Pacific 2026. Twelve teams. One question: can anyone dethrone the Blues?
The season gets underway February 13 with the Highlanders hosting the Crusaders in Dunedin. After the Blues dominated the 2025 campaign, every other team is chasing. The bigger question for Australian rugby: can one of our franchises break the New Zealand stranglehold on the title?
Australian Conference Preview
ACT Brumbies — Best Chance for Australian Glory
The ACT Brumbies enter 2026 as the top-ranked Australian team and the side most likely to challenge the leading New Zealand franchises. Under Stephen Larkham’s coaching, the Brumbies have built a squad rich in Wallabies talent. Rob Valetini and Nick Frost provide forward grunt, Len Ikitau organises the midfield, and Noah Lolesio directs operations at fly-half. The addition of speedster Corey Toole on the wing adds genuine strike power. If the Brumbies can maintain their trademark set-piece dominance and improve their try-scoring rate, a finals appearance is the minimum expectation.
Queensland Reds — Youth and Energy
The Queensland Reds boast one of the most exciting young squads in the competition. Tate McDermott at scrumhalf and Fraser McReight at openside flanker are genuine world-class talents, while Harry Wilson adds power from the blindside. Matt Faessler has developed into a reliable hooker. The Reds’ home advantage at Suncorp Stadium remains formidable, and with the right coaching structure, this young squad has the talent to push for a top-eight finish.
NSW Waratahs — Rebuilding with Promise
The NSW Waratahs continue their rebuilding phase but have genuine quality in key positions. Andrew Kellaway provides class in the back three, Langi Gleeson is an explosive loose forward, and Jake Gordon brings experience at halfback. Angus Bell is developing into a quality prop. The return to Allianz Stadium has reinvigorated the fanbase, and improving consistency remains the key challenge.
Western Force — Building From Perth
The Western Force face the unique challenge of competing from Australia’s most isolated major city. Ben Donaldson provides playmaking quality, and the squad is gradually building depth. The travel demands placed on Perth-based teams are significant, but the Force’s growing squad culture and passionate supporter base provide a foundation for improvement.
New Zealand Conference
The New Zealand teams continue to set the benchmark in Super Rugby Pacific. The Blues, with Beauden Barrett, Rieko Ioane, Caleb Clarke, and Mark Tele’a, are the clear title favourites. The Hurricanes, led by the incomparable Ardie Savea and the versatile Jordie Barrett, will be eager to go one better than their 2024 final defeat. The Chiefs, with Damian McKenzie’s flair and Sam Cane’s experience, are perennial contenders, while the Crusaders — led by All Blacks captain Scott Barrett and the electric Will Jordan — can never be written off despite entering a transitional phase.
Pacific Teams
The Fijian Drua showed exciting improvement in 2025, with Seru Uru leading from the back row. Their explosive attacking style and growing experience at this level make them genuine contenders for a top-eight finish. Moana Pasifika continue to build their foundations under the guidance of Tana Umaga, with each season bringing incremental improvement.
2026 Predictions
The Blues are the team to beat. The Hurricanes and Chiefs have the firepower to challenge. Among Australian teams, the Brumbies are the most likely to reach the semi-finals. The Reds have the talent to surprise, particularly at home. Full 2026 fixtures and standings are available on the Australia Football.
