The Hurricanes have the Round 1 bye and will enter the competition in Round 2.

New Laws to Boost Ball-in-Play Time

One of the most significant developments heading into the 2026 season is the introduction of new law amendments specifically designed to reduce stoppages and increase ball-in-play time. The changes come after extensive consultation between SANZAAR, World Rugby, and the competing unions, all of whom have identified the pace and flow of the game as a priority for both player welfare and fan engagement.

The amendments target several areas that have historically contributed to dead time in matches, including the speed of set-piece resets, the management of substitutions, and the protocols around TMO referrals. The objective is to keep the ball alive for longer periods and reward teams that play with tempo and continuity.

Referees have been briefed extensively during the pre-season, and trial applications of the new laws during warm-up fixtures have been positively received. How they translate to the pressure of competitive matches will be one of the key storylines of the early rounds.

11 Teams, 14-Match Round-Robin

The 2026 competition retains its 11-team structure, comprising five New Zealand franchises (Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders, Highlanders), five Australian franchises (Waratahs, Reds, Brumbies, Force, and the Rebels’ successor in Melbourne), and two Pacific Island teams (Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika).

Each team plays 14 round-robin matches, facing every other team at least once with three additional fixtures providing home-and-away balance against selected opponents. The format ensures a rigorous and equitable regular season before the top eight teams progress to the finals series.

Key Storylines to Watch

The Blues enter the season as defending champions and favourites to go back-to-back, but the Chiefs and Hurricanes both strengthened significantly during the off-season. In Australia, the Brumbies remain the benchmark, while the Waratahs are desperate to prove that their 2025 improvement was no false dawn.

The Fijian Drua continue to grow as a franchise and have been boosted by the retention of several key players who were targeted by overseas clubs. Their Round 1 clash with Moana Pasifika in Lautoka promises to be a passionate and physical affair in front of a vocal home crowd.

The Western Force host the Brumbies on Saturday night in Perth, a fixture that carries added significance as the Force look to establish themselves as genuine finals contenders rather than perennial battlers.
